Moroccan Farmworkers Stranded in Spain Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Faced with the silence of the Moroccan government, the Association of Small Producers (UPA) of Andalusia plans to demonstrate on June 11 in front of the Moroccan consulate to demand the return of the 12,621 seasonal workers.
The Moroccan seasonal workers who participated in the red fruit harvest campaign in Huelva are waiting to be repatriated to Morocco. But with the current diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Spain, they are desperate, reports the Spanish website agroinformacion, which specifies that, faced with the silence of the Moroccan government, the UPA of Andalusia intends to demonstrate on June 11 in front of the Moroccan consulate to demand the return of these seasonal workers.
A first wave of 104 seasonal workers was already repatriated to Morocco on May 19, thanks to the pressure of the UPA, which had requested a meeting with the Moroccan consul to discuss the arrangements for the return of the remaining seasonal workers. But since then, radio silence. That’s why the association has again asked to meet the consul on June 11 to find a solution to the problem.
According to the UPA of Andalusia, it is the responsibility of the Moroccan government to facilitate the return of these seasonal workers, the majority of whom have not seen their loved ones since December 2020. If the government does not react quickly to organize the return of the latter, we risk finding ourselves in the same situation as last year when, due to the health crisis, they were finally repatriated in July.
