Moroccan Farmers Seek Urgent Aid as Drought Devastates Livestock Industry

Severely affected by the drought, livestock farmers and meat producers are calling for urgent government aid to avoid a major crisis.
Livestock farmers and meat producers in the Fès-Meknès region have been recording heavy losses for months due to the drought, reports Al Massae. This drought has caused a surge in the prices of livestock feed. As a result, breeders and meat producers find themselves forced to sell their livestock at a loss in the weekly markets.
Faced with this deplorable and persistent situation, they are asking the state to grant them urgent financial aid. They also call on the government to intervene urgently to provide fodder at rates taking into account their financial situation. Not to mention asking the Executive to declare a state of drought in the kingdom.
Mohamed Boukriz, president of the regional coordination of agricultural products, recalls that Morocco has been facing recurring droughts since 2017. That year, the government had granted farmers a subsidy of 5 to 6 kilograms of feed per animal, in order to mitigate the effects of the crisis.
