Moroccan Man Jailed for Brutal Donkey Mutilation, Sparking Animal Rights Outcry

A resident of the Zaouia Ben Khlil douar was sentenced by the court of first instance of Zagora to two months in prison, including one month firm, for having mutilated a donkey. The man will also have to pay a fine of 200 dirhams.

The incident dates back to the end of the last Ramadan. The animal would have entered the accused’s field to graze there, provoking the latter’s anger. "With bad intentions, he amputated the animal’s hind legs," said Lamine Lbayed, an associative activist.

The case aroused strong emotion on social networks after Lamine Lbayed reported the facts. The Association for the Protection of Animals and the Environment of Marrakech even joined the case as a civil party.

The man was arrested by the Royal Gendarmerie of Zagora and then presented to the King’s Prosecutor. Released after paying bail, he was ultimately convicted of "mutilation without necessity of a draft animal", in accordance with Article 601 of the Penal Code. The bail paid will cover the legal costs, the remainder of the sum being returned to him.
