Moroccan Gendarmes Arrested in Anti-Corruption Sting Operation

Two gendarmes from the city of Agdz, in the Zagora region, were arrested and questioned on suspicion of corruption, following a complaint filed by a citizen.
It all started when a man contacted the anti-corruption green number set up by the Attorney General’s office, reports Al3omk. His complaint concerned gendarmes from Agdz. The Attorney General near the Court of Appeal of Ouarzazate then entrusted the investigation to the Zagora court prosecutor’s office.
After a month of investigations, one of the gendarmes was caught red-handed receiving a bribe of 2,000 dirhams (200 euros) from the complainant. The King’s Prosecutor of Zagora personally witnessed the scene. The gendarme was supposed to conduct a preliminary investigation in exchange for this sum. He is suspected of being involved in a theft case.
A second gendarme was also arrested as part of this case. The initial elements of the investigation, based on the statements of the various parties and the CCTV images of the Agdz Royal Gendarmerie center, led to the detention of the two gendarmes.
On Thursday evening, the two suspects were brought before the Attorney General near the Court of Appeal of Ouarzazate. He decided to refer one of the gendarmes to the investigating judge to further investigate the facts of corruption. The judge ordered his incarceration in the local prison. The second gendarme was referred to the King’s Prosecutor near the Zagora court.
