Moroccan Exporters Embrace Green Shift as EU Carbon Tax Looms

To promote the decarbonization and green growth of exporting companies, the Moroccan Association of Exporters (ASMEX) has exchanged with its members. The objective: to help initiate the transition in order to engage in the international dynamic in favor of the climate.
The webinar held on Tuesday was led by Philippe Miquel, President of Engie Services Maroc and President of the Clean Energy Commission of ASMEX. In his presentation, the official indicated to the participants the importance of decarbonization for all exporting companies to Europe, a market that alone represents more than 60% of trade between Morocco and foreign countries.
"Certainly, several points still need to be clarified regarding the implementation of the carbon tax at the borders, but it is very important to have an overview of decarbonization, its challenges for exporting companies to Europe, and to know what is really changing for industrialists who will be able to see many new opportunities open up to them," he stressed.
For his part, the President of ASMEX, Hassan Sentissi, urged industrialists to "accompany the transition towards abandoning the use of fossil fuels in favor of low-carbon energy sources and raw materials, increase energy efficiency and accelerate energy performance contracts, facilitate the development and supply of low-carbon electricity, develop a green gas industry and develop CO2 capture and recovery capabilities."
At the end of this awareness-raising session, Miquel affirmed that Morocco offered a favorable context for industrialists to succeed in this transition, recalling that the key to success lay in the level of commitment and awareness of industrialists and exporters who will have much to gain after the implementation of this tax from 2023.
