Moroccan Expats in Spain Protest Driving License Recognition Rules

Moroccan residents and drivers in Spain demonstrated last week in front of the DGT in Madrid and the Moroccan embassy in Spain to demand that a solution be found to the problem of recognition of driving licenses.
To have their driving license recognized in Spain, Moroccans residing on the Iberian Peninsula must undergo a theoretical exam, which seems complicated, as some of them cannot read or write in Spanish. Before 2004, Spain and Morocco had a direct license recognition agreement.
The problem lies in the fact that the licenses of thousands of Moroccan residents in Spain are not valid because they had not taken the exam, reports El Debate. During the demonstrations organized last week, the Moroccan residents abroad explained that they need these driving licenses to work.
As a solution, the Moroccans concerned propose to take a practical exam, rather than a theoretical one, claiming that this situation causes them significant harm, as they are forced to pay a fine of 500 euros each time they are stopped on the road with their Moroccan driving license which is not accepted in Spain.
