Moroccan Expats See 45% Surge in Property Fraud Complaints, Interior Ministry Reports

In 2021, Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) filed 290 complaints related to property dispossession in Morocco, compared to 200 complaints recorded last year by the Ministry of the Interior.
Complaints from MREs for real estate dispossession increased by 45%, according to a recent report from the General Inspectorate of the Ministry of the Interior. These complaints filed at the level of the embassies and consulates of the kingdom are studied and referred to the competent Moroccan authorities who, after carrying out all the necessary investigations, are responsible for providing the complainants with response elements.

The complaints come mostly from MREs from the Netherlands, Belgium and France, reports Al Oâmk. In detail, the Moroccan consulates in the Netherlands have already received this year 30 complaints from Rotterdam, 28 from Amsterdam, 23 from Den Bosch, and 21 complaints from Utrecht. In Morocco, the Nador province is the most cited in these complaints with 40 files. It is followed by Driouech with 28 complaints and Al Hoceima with 20 complaints.

According to the report of the Interior Department, 27.2% of the complaints concern dispossession of real estate. The document notes 44 complaints on real estate disputes, 38 on development and construction files, 18 on collective lands and 6 on the actions of certain administrative officers.
