Moroccan Expats Fall Victim to Vacation Rental Scams in Popular Coastal Areas

On vacation in Morocco, Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) have been victims of scams through brokers, and sometimes even companies that broadcast misleading images of furnished apartments and equipped rooms like aparthotels, rented at high prices.
Hundreds of vacationers - Moroccans and MREs - who chose to spend part of their summer vacation in the M’diq and Marina Smir region, have been victims of real estate scams. The rental of rooms in the Marina Beach area exceeds 2,000 dirhams per night. Despite these scams, most of them do not file complaints with the competent authorities. They prefer to continue their vacation, reluctantly, in poor conditions to satisfy the desires of their children.

There are still vacationers who are taking to social media. Some have shared videos and photos showing that they had been scammed, while others have chosen to post their complaints on social media. They point to the lack of control in this sector in Morocco, while it is regulated in some countries. In Spain, the rental of apartments is subject to strict procedures, starting with a legal declaration, going through an inspection concerning the standards and quality, then the use of recognized applications and specialized marketing companies that respect the customer and show them all the details of the apartment or room without addition or omission, it is specified.
