Moroccan Expats Face Soaring Ferry Prices for Summer Return Home

Ferry ticket prices are soaring to the dismay of Moroccans living abroad (MRE), especially those living in Spain who are eager to return to Morocco to see their families and spend their holidays, after two years of the Covid-19 health crisis and travel restrictions. Deputy Malika Lahyan calls on Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita to take measures to facilitate the return of MREs.
As MREs wish to return to Morocco to spend the summer holidays or see their families, an obstacle stands in their way: the surge in ferry ticket prices for crossings to the port of Tarifa. Deputy Malika Lahyan has written to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, to inform him of the situation.
"As we approach the summer holidays, and with this year’s Marhaba operation aimed at welcoming Moroccans, they (the MREs) could have trouble coming in the midst of the rise in ticket prices," she wrote. According to the elected official, the total cost of the trip to and from Morocco can climb up to 8,000 dirhams (800 euros). A huge amount for the families of MREs who are already suffering from the high cost of living.
Faced with this price hike, Malika Lahyan is asking the head of Moroccan diplomacy to implement measures to lower prices and support the return of MREs and foreign tourists.
