Moroccan Expats Face Border Chaos: New Tech Causes Hours-Long Delays at Melilla Crossing

The summer vacation turns into a nightmare for some Moroccans living abroad. The return to the country is transformed into an ordeal at the Melilla border. Endless queues, exasperated travelers, crying children... The picture is far from idyllic.
The cause of this chaos? The new control procedures put in place by the Spanish authorities. Intended to streamline traffic, the intelligent devices installed at the border post seem to have the opposite effect. Security agents, not used to these new technologies, struggle to manage the flow of travelers. Result: waiting times are getting longer, reaching several hours.
This situation is all the more frustrating for travelers as the other crossing points between Morocco and Spain do not experience the same difficulties. The ports of Tanger Med or Algeciras, for example, are functioning normally. Faced with this situation, many Moroccans living abroad no longer hesitate to take a detour to avoid the Melilla border post.
In addition to the technical problems, the reinforced vehicle checks by the Spanish authorities also contribute to slowing down the crossing. Concerned about preventing the entry of food products into Spanish territory, the customs officers inspect each car meticulously, which provokes the ire of the travelers.
