Operation Marhaba Kicks Off with Mixed Results as Thousands Cross to North Africa

More than 11,400 Moroccans from Europe and 3,000 vehicles transited through the ports of Cadiz, Algeciras and Tarifa on June 15, the start date of Operation Marhaba.

In detail, 9,264 MRE and 2,782 vehicles passed through the port of Algeciras in two rotations, and 2,199 MRE and 302 cars in one day through the port of Tarifa, according to data from the civil protection reported by Europa Press. Compared to the 2024 edition, there was a 25% decrease in passenger flow on the first day of the Operation in Algeciras and Tarifa. However, the number of passengers who opted for the Algeciras-Ceuta line increased this year by 36.7%, with 1,605 additional travelers.

The number of MRE on the Algeciras-Tangier line recorded a 58.8% decrease on June 15, with 4,688 fewer MRE than in 2024. Some 2,199 people traveled from the port of Tarifa to the port of Tangier at the beginning of the OPE, a decrease of 25.5% and 751 fewer travelers than in 2024.

Operation Marhaba in Morocco or Paso del Estrecho (OPE) in Spain takes place every year from June 15 to September 15. It aims to facilitate the return to Morocco of Moroccans residing in Europe during the summer. For this edition, the flow of MRE and vehicles could increase by 4% and 5% respectively.

To avoid traffic jams, the authorities of the Andalusian ports have recommended that MRE going to Morocco arrive at the port with their tickets closed. These tickets are available online on the websites of the maritime companies AML, Armas-Trasmediterránea, Balearia and FRS-DFDS, or at approved sales outlets in the service areas of the main roads leading to the port of Algeciras.
