Moroccan Editor-in-Chief Denied Bail in Rape and Kidnapping Case

Souleiman Raissouni, editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Akhbar Al Yaoum, who is being prosecuted for "rape" of a young man and his "kidnapping", will remain in detention. This is the decision of the criminal chamber of the court of first instance near the court of appeal of Casablanca, which refused to grant him provisional release.

While the journalist and his relatives were convinced that the court would issue a favorable opinion, they were surprised by the turn of events. The court made its decision on Thursday, after postponing the examination of a request presented by the journalist’s defense during the hearing last Tuesday. During this hearing, Souleiman Raissouni had also requested, through his lawyers, to have access to the documents held by the Public Prosecutor’s Office which clearly establish his guilt, to the point that provisional release was denied to him.

In a statement to Hespress, Souleiman Raissouni’s wife not only called for respect for his right to have access to the documents in his trial file, but also for his provisional release to be granted quickly.

Since he has been accused of "rape and kidnapping" of a young man named Adam, Souleiman Raissouni has always proclaimed his innocence, rejecting these accusations.

The journalist took over the editorship of the daily newspaper "Akhbar Al Yaoum" after the arrest and conviction of the founder of the newspaper, Taoufiq Bouachrine, to 15 years in prison for a case of "sexual violence".
