Moroccan-Dutch Player Wins $1.8M Lawsuit, Pledges $540K to Gaza Aid

Anwar El Ghazi announced on Friday on his social networks that he had won his legal battle against his former club, Mainz. The player of Moroccan origin, fired for having expressed his support for Palestine in the conflict in Gaza, has just received from the club an amount of 1.7 million euros as compensation.

After winning a first trial in July, with the justice having condemned Mainz for abusive dismissal, El Ghazi has just won his legal battle against his former club. This August, the court ordered Mainz to pay the Dutch player of Moroccan origin the sum of 1.7 million euros as compensation.

"After receiving a significant payment from Mainz, I would like to clarify that my legal battle has never, for me, been a question of money," El Ghazi wrote in a post on X, indicating that 500,000 euros "will be donated to projects for children in Gaza."

While thanking Mainz for this payment, El Ghazi hopes that the club, "despite its unsuccessful and repeated attempts to avoid having to make this payment, will console itself by the fact that they will, through me, have financially contributed to making life a little more bearable for the children of Gaza."

The former Lille striker will add: "In trying to silence me on this subject, they (Mainz) have made my voice even stronger for the oppressed and oppressed of Gaza." After leaving Mainz, the 29-year-old player currently plays for Cardiff City, in the English second division.
