New Moroccan Drug ’Karkoubi’ Raises Alarm in Spain as Authorities Scramble to Respond

Spain is facing a "new drug" from Morocco. Called "karkoubi" and very well known in the kingdom, it is often referred to as "the drug of the poor".
This mixture of hashish and Rivotril, imported from Morocco, causes psychotic reactions in users, with variable sedative effects. The rapid spread of this substance on the Spanish market is worrying the authorities.
Karkoubi is gaining ground everywhere in the country, increasing the fears of the authorities. Known for a long time in Morocco, its impact is particularly manifested in the most disadvantaged segments of society. Faced with this threat, the National Police is mobilizing to raise awareness through social networks and by intensifying seizures in Madrid, Andalusia and Alicante.
The chemical composition of karkoubi, combining hashish and clonazepam, creates a powerful psychotropic cocktail. The unregulated consumption of clonazepam, especially when combined with alcohol, increases the risks of serious side effects. The codeine present in this mixture increases the danger of dependence and respiratory disorders.
To fight against this drug, the National Police has strengthened its collaboration with pharmacists, encouraging them to be vigilant in the face of suspicious prescriptions and to report any doubts to the authorities.
The Spanish authorities are not sitting idly by. Operation Camaco, led by the Civil Guard, led to the arrest of two people in Andújar, province of Jaén, involved in an alleged Rivotril trafficking linked to karkoubi.
Similarly, the "lgharb-Valla" operation (note the Arabic name!), carried out jointly by several services, including the Police, made it possible to dismantle a network involved in the production of karkoubi. This intervention resulted in significant drug seizures and the arrest of several members of the network.
