Moroccan Doctor Fined $1 Million for Botched Circumcision, Child Left Disabled

A doctor practicing in Nador was sentenced to a prison term and ordered to pay 10 million dirhams in damages to the family of a child, for the harm suffered after a circumcision.
In August 2021, a child suffering from inflammation of the glans and foreskin was circumcised in a medical office in Nador. But complications arose after the operation. The child’s mother "noticed bleeding in the child and complications that worsened," reports the Arabic daily Assabah.
The child was admitted to the university hospital center (CHU) of Oujda. A medical team examined him and found "a case of permanent disability." The child’s father took the case to court. He accuses the doctor of having amputated his son’s glans, which consequently caused "permanent disability difficult to treat."
A trial opened before the Court of First Instance of Nador in February 2022. After eighteen hearings and several expert assessments, a final expert assessment was ordered. A medical team composed of the director of the university hospital center of Oujda and other specialists in pediatric surgery from the Al Farabi hospital of Oujda "was called upon." Based on the conclusions of this expertise, the court sentenced the doctor to a prison sentence and ordered him to pay 10 million dirhams in damages to the child’s family.
