Moroccan Diaspora Travel Surges: 62% Increase in Malaga Port Crossings to Morocco

More than 13,000 Moroccans from Europe embarked at the port of Malaga bound for Morocco in the first two weeks of the Marhaba 2022 Operation, an increase of 62.3% compared to the 2019 edition.
The flow of Moroccans living abroad (MREs) in Malaga has increased by 62.3% since June 15, the start date of the Marhaba Operation, according to data provided by the sub-delegation of the government. In detail, 13,395 MREs and 2,947 vehicles have embarked for Morocco on one of the 28 rotations carried out by the shipping companies Balearia and Trasmediterránea providing this service between June 15 and 30.
In total, only 7.1% of MREs transited through the port of Malaga to Morocco during these first two weeks of the Marhaba Operation, with the ports of Algeciras and Tarifa being the most used by MREs, whose number is already 188,253, reports Diario Sur.
For the sub-delegate of the government in Malaga, Javier Salas, the Marhaba Operation is going well. A security system of 1,100 agents has been set up in Malaga to ensure the fluidity of traffic and guarantee the protection of travelers. Civil protection, health, and Red Cross agents have also been deployed on the ground.
The Marhaba 2022 Operation started on June 15 and will end on September 15. It takes place in two phases: an exit phase which is underway and will continue until August 15, and a return phase which will take place from July 15 to September 15. Record flows will be recorded on July 8 and 9 due to Eid al-Adha scheduled for July 10, on July 14 (French National Day), and from July 29 to August 1.
