Moroccan Diaspora’s Summer Return Boosts Spanish Tourism, Generating Millions

Operation Marhaba 2022 will generate 9 million euros for the province of Salamanca, particularly for the restaurants and hotels on the A-66 where Moroccans from France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands stop before reaching Morocco.
"We are eagerly awaiting the return of Moroccans who take a break to eat during their journey to Morocco in the summer, as they consume more than regular customers," explains Inmaculada Martín, owner of a business located near the A-66. Many professionals in the tourism sector of the region hope that Moroccans residing abroad will stop, have a drink or spend the night before continuing on their way.

The passage of Moroccans residing in Europe through the roads of Salamanca will also bring a breath of fresh air to the establishments specializing in Arab cuisine located at the entrance of the city. Said runs a company in Castellanos de Moriscos where buses going to Algeciras generally stop. It had to close after the cancellation of Operation Transit in 2020. "Until last summer, we didn’t open the doors, but we hope to have a good summer this year," Said said.
