Moroccan Diaspora Pushes for Constitutional Right to Vote in Elections

The participation of Moroccans of the World in elections is a "constitutional right, requiring legal guarantees for the exercise of this right," claimed Abdellah Boussouf, the Secretary General of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), during the 98th diplomatic meeting organized by the Diplomatic Foundation in Rabat. About forty foreign embassies accredited in Morocco, as well as representatives of global organizations, took part in this meeting.
All Moroccan political parties agree on the need for the participation of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) in elections, Boussouf said, although the exchanges for the realization of this constitutional right have not yet been conclusive, reports Atlasinfo. For Boussouf, migration is essential for the balance and stability of the world, it allows dialogue and rapprochement between religions, cultures and peoples.
Also, migrants from Morocco, Turkey and Greece have shown great support in the development of the Covid-19 vaccine. In the same vein, the Moroccan diaspora has been of great use through the social and humanitarian actions carried out in the countries of residence, as well as the significant money transfers made during the pandemic.
During this period, while money transfers made by migrants around the world fell by 20%, those of Moroccans of the World climbed by 5%, or nearly 70 billion dirhams in 2020, according to studies by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Regarding the efforts made by Morocco in the fight against extremism and terrorism among migrants, Boussouf specified that the kingdom is able to face extremist, nihilistic and terrorist ideas, through the call for the development of a model of religiosity based on three main pillars: knowledge, a rational religious project with a critical spirit and a spiritual dimension.
