Moroccan Diaspora Faces Steep Ferry Costs for Summer Return Home

While elected officials have questioned the government and it has promised to find a solution, boat ticket prices continue to soar. This complicates the return of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) to Morocco.
As of June 12, the expenses to be incurred for the Tarifa-Tangier maritime crossing of a vehicle with a single passenger amount to 227 euros (nearly 2,500 DH), reports the site Les Inspirations Eco. The fare exceeds 400 euros, or more than 4,000 DH for a vehicle occupied by 5 passengers. A single passenger, without a car, will have to pay 43 euros (430 DH) while this fare was set at 32 euros before the start of Operation Marhaba 2022.
Operation Marhaba 2022 will benefit the shipping companies more than Morocco, as most of the companies operating the crossings are almost Spanish. "Operation Marhaba 2022 should generate at least $1 billion in revenue for the companies concerned. As for "maritime" Morocco, it should reap $100 million," says a maritime expert.
