Moroccan Customs Unveiled: 5 Essential Tips for Smooth Travel and VAT Refunds

Passing through Moroccan customs requires complying with certain formalities. Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) and occasional travelers must be aware of these procedures to avoid delays, penalties or loss of tax benefits. Here are five key points.

1. Register your purchases to benefit from the VAT refund

Non-resident short-stay visitors can request a refund of the VAT on their purchases over 2,000 dirhams including tax. The seller must issue an export sales slip, to be presented to customs upon departure.

2. Respect the 3-month deadline to take out your goods

Goods purchased in Morocco and subject to the tax refund must be transported in your personal luggage and leave the country within a maximum of 3 months after the date of purchase. Exceeding this deadline results in the loss of the right to a refund.

3. Present your purchases to customs upon departure

To benefit from the exemption, you must present the purchased goods, the slip and the invoices at the customs office when leaving the territory. Without this visa, no VAT refund will be granted.

4. Check the exclusions from the duty-free allowance

Certain products are always excluded from the tax refund and therefore subject to duties and taxes: food, tobacco, medicines (except for personal use), unset precious stones, weapons, private vehicles and their equipment, cultural goods.

5. Anticipate the formalities for your vehicle

MREs who bring a car back to Morocco benefit from the Temporary Admission (AT) regime. But the deadlines and conditions must be strictly respected, under penalty of fines and even seizure of the vehicle.

VAT refund, deadlines, customs presentation, exclusions and formalities related to vehicles: knowing these procedures in advance allows MREs to travel peacefully and avoid costly inconveniences.
