Slum Residents Revolt: Casablanca’s Bouih Relocation Project Sparks Outrage Over Broken Promises
In Casablanca, the relocation of the Bouih slum located in the Aïn Sebaâ neighborhood is not well received by the slum residents. They denounce "dubious maneuvers" within the framework of the real estate project intended to rehouse them before the demolition of their precarious dwellings.
The inhabitants of the Bouih slum, in Aïn Sebaâ, are angry with the authorities due to an unfulfilled promise. While they expected to be rehoused in apartments located on Boulevard Abdelkader Sahraoui, they note that the authorities have redirected the project to the "Chichane" area, near Lahraouiyine. This has aroused their indignation. Following a visit to the model housing, the beneficiaries categorically refused the apartments assigned to them on the grounds that they are unsuitable for family needs, particularly due to their small size compared to the number of members in each household.
They believe that these housing units do not meet minimum sanitation standards and would therefore be uninhabitable. "Faced with this situation, the inhabitants threaten to demand a return to their land if the authorities do not respect their commitments," says Al Akhbar. Another demand: concrete guarantees before any relocation, including compensation for temporary housing, a precise relocation schedule, transparency in project management, and special attention for single-parent families.
To make themselves heard, they regularly organize sit-ins. They call on the authorities to respect the promises they have made to them, particularly during election campaigns.
