Moroccan Customs Uncovers $1 Billion in Fraudulent Invoices, Recovers $300 Million in Penalties

The customs services have succeeded, thanks to the use of digitization, in identifying several false declarations with a total value of 10 billion dirhams, forcing the offenders to repay three billion dirhams in penalties.
The under-invoicing operations were detected by the Moroccan customs officers thanks to the exchange of data with other countries, as well as other elements they have. The customs agents also carry out field checks in the various regions of the country.
Customs relies primarily on digitization services to verify the authenticity of the declarations of the various service providers and make the necessary corrections. In 2018, more than 719 control operations were carried out by the customs services, making it possible to recover 4.9 billion dirhams in customs taxes and duties, in addition to penalties worth 3 billion dirhams.
The establishment of a special national unit has made it possible to improve the control of offenses committed by drug traffickers as well as people who avoid fulfilling customs obligations throughout the national territory. This cell has also enabled rapid intervention and effective coordination to identify traffickers who are organized in networks.
