Moroccan Customs Seize Over 150,000 Euros from Expatriates at Tanger-Med Port

Several operations by the Moroccan customs services have in recent days led to the arrest of Moroccans residing abroad, in possession of large sums of undeclared money to the Foreign Exchange Office.

In a press release published by the MAP, customs indicate that they seized, during six operations, some 149,570 euros that "six Moroccans residing abroad were trying to bring into Morocco without going through the usual procedures". Two other operations, this time on departure, allowed the seizure of 17,900 euros that the MREs were trying to leave the country without the authorization "of the competent financial institutions".

At the beginning of the month, still at Tanger Med, the customs officers seized the sum of 130,000 euros that an Italian-based Moroccan was trying to bring into the national territory.

It should be noted that in Morocco, it is strictly forbidden to export or import currency without the written authorization of the Foreign Exchange Office. However, facilities exist for tourists and young Moroccans studying abroad.

During another operation carried out last weekend, the customs officers seized 294 smartphones, worth 729,000 dirhams, that a Moroccan residing in Spain had hidden in the seats of his car, while on Monday, 233 used mobile phones were discovered in the car of another MRE.
