Moroccan Customs Officers Among 8 Arrested in Major Drug Trafficking Bust

Eight individuals, including two customs officers, were arrested on Wednesday by elements of the prefectural judicial police service in Oujda, for their alleged involvement in a case of drug and psychotropic trafficking, alcohol trafficking and the embezzlement of seized items in the context of criminal cases.
The accused were arrested on the basis of precise information provided by the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST). The first suspect, who is the subject of seven national arrest warrants for drug trafficking, was apprehended in Douar Jouadra, 15 kilometers from the eastern border of Morocco, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). Five other people, including a woman, suspected of being involved in cases of trafficking in psychotropic drugs, cocaine and cannabis resin, were subsequently arrested, the same source said.
The statement specifies that after research and investigations, it appears that the defendants are doing business with two customs officers who provide them with drugs and psychotropic substances after having embezzled them from the seized items depot. For these fraudulent acts, the two customs officers were also arrested and made available for the investigation.
A significant quantity of various items was seized after the searches carried out at the suspects’ homes. These include furniture, 5 cars, 16 mobile phones, 42 bottles of smuggled wine, 9 kg of cannabis resin, and a sum of over 200,000 dirhams.
The defendants were placed in custody for the preliminary investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office in order to shed light on this case.
