Moroccan Court Sentences 14 in High-Profile Rape and Kidnapping Case

The Court of Appeal of Beni Mellal sentenced, on Tuesday, September 21, 14 defendants to various prison terms for charges of "rape, kidnapping, sequestration, tattooing and human trafficking" in the case of Khadija O. alias "the tattoo girl". In total, 226 years of imprisonment were handed out.
In August 2018, Khadija, then 17 years old, had been kidnapped, sequestered and raped for two months by a dozen men aged 18 to 28 from her village of Oulad Ayad, near Beni Mellal. In a video that went viral, she showed her injuries, sometimes obscene tattoos and cigarette burns on a large part of her body. This case, which had caused an outcry in Morocco, had led to many demonstrations in the country.
