Moroccan Court Dismisses Human Trafficking Case Against Spanish Migrant Rights Activist

The Moroccan justice system has decided to dismiss the case of the Spanish human rights activist, Helena Maleno, prosecuted for "human trafficking".
Well known in northern Morocco and in Spain for the assistance provided to migrants through her association Caminando Fronteras, the Spaniard had been questioned by the Moroccan police and then prosecuted by the justice system after the transmission of her file by the Spanish justice system.
In a statement to AFP from Tangier, Helena Malena welcomed this decision which, according to her, sets a precedent by highlighting "the right to life" as stipulated in international conventions.
"The right to life must be guaranteed. That’s what we want. I’ve always trusted the Moroccan justice system because I’ve always believed in my innocence," she said, adding that "the decision of the Moroccan justice system is a precedent, because it says that the right to life must be defended as international conventions say."
As soon as her indictment in Morocco was announced, several organizations and personalities had mobilized in Morocco and Spain to demand the end of legal proceedings against her.
It should be noted that Helena Malena had been prosecuted in Spain for the same facts and, as in Morocco, her case had been dismissed.
