Moroccan Couple’s Wedding Plans Derailed by Dowry Dispute in Court

Attention future spouses. A dispute over the dowry leads Moroccan future spouses and their parents to court.
Two young Moroccans decided to formalize their union after the reopening of the family courts. They went to a court to withdraw the marriage authorization they had previously filed, reports Assabah. After this step, the couple went to the neighborhood adoul to conclude the marriage certificate.
As they were on their way, the young lady asked her future husband not to contest the amount of the dowry that her mother would demand. He said nothing. Once at the adoul’s, the documents were prepared, the future spouses expressed their consent. But the amount of the dowry will be a problem. The future mother-in-law is demanding a down payment of 3,000 dirhams and an arrears of 70,000 dirhams in the event of divorce from her future son-in-law.
This request provoked the reaction of the mother of the future groom. She expresses her opposition. Tempers flare up. The future groom took his mother’s side. The future bride did the same. The adoul intervened to make the two mothers see reason. Without success. The case was finally brought before the court.
