Moroccan Consumer Group Raises Alarm Over Unlicensed ’Mobile Bakeries’

The Moroccan Observatory for Consumer Protection has filed a complaint with the authorities in Marrakech concerning the proliferation of informal bread and pastry shops, real "mobile bakeries".
According to the Observatory, these businesses, which do not have the legal authorizations and do not comply with hygiene standards, create unfair competition towards legally established bakeries and pastry shops. The latter have to bear significant financial burdens, such as taxes, social security contributions and fees for the use of public property, unlike informal businesses.
The Observatory also indicates that these "mobile bakeries" represent a health risk for consumers, as they are not subject to any health control. It calls on the authorities to intervene quickly to close these businesses and protect consumers as well as professionals in the sector.
Marrakech is not the only city affected by the multiplication of this type of illegal business. Many other cities are also facing the same phenomenon.
