Moroccan Consulate Officials in Barcelona Probed for Passport Service Embezzlement

Three officials from the Moroccan Consulate General in Barcelona are under investigation for embezzlement. They are currently being questioned by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ).
The three officials are allegedly involved in a case of embezzlement in the passport service dating back to December 2019. In January 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent an inspection mission to the Consulate General in Barcelona, following which it seized the General Treasury of the Kingdom (TGR).
In turn, the TGR sent inspectors to the said consulate, before asking the Judicial Agency of the Kingdom to file two complaints with the financial courts. The case is the subject of an investigation entrusted to the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ).
Among the three officials allegedly involved in this embezzlement case, one has already been recalled to the ministry in Rabat. The other two are local officials (contractors hired in Spain). The contract of one of them would already have been terminated.
