Moroccan Consulate Halts Cremation, Ensures Muslim Burial for Expatriate in Madrid

The Moroccan Consulate in Madrid intervened last Friday to prevent the cremation of a Moroccan national who died in anonymity. Confined alone at home, the deceased, of a certain age, had no longer given any sign of life.
Once her disappearance was reported, the Moroccan Consulate approached the local authorities to discover that the deceased, whose exact circumstances of death have not been revealed, had been transferred to the Madrid morgue.
Although her relatives had given their written consent for the cremation of the body, the Consul General of the Kingdom had a different opinion and requested the services of a Muslim funeral home to bury her according to Muslim funeral rites.
In a press release sent earlier to the Moroccan community in Spain, the consulate had announced the coverage, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of funeral expenses during the coronavirus pandemic period.
