Moroccan Coach Karim Bencherifa Takes Helm of Singapore Women's National Soccer Team

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has appointed Moroccan Karim Bencherifa, 55, as the new head coach of the national women’s team. He succeeds Stephen Ng Heng Seng.

A new mission for Karim Bencherifa. The Moroccan coach is returning to Singapore, where he has already proven himself. He had coached between 2004 and 2006 Tanjong Pagar United or Woodlands Wellington. He is now the new coach of the Singaporean women’s football team, as can be read on the FAS website. His first objective will be to qualify the Singaporean selection for the Olympics for the first time in its history. Next April, he should start the qualifications in a group including Mongolia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Other challenges: the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Cambodia (May) and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China (September).

To meet these challenges, Bencherifa defines his strategy: "Building a winning mentality is not done overnight. It takes dedication, commitment and, above all, self-confidence and trust in others. I intend to focus on setting up structured training programs that go beyond exploiting the technical abilities of the players." "While winning matches is the ultimate goal, I want the Lionesses to enjoy playing each match first. At the final whistle, regardless of the score, they must already be eager to do better for the next match. The desire to constantly improve must never cease," he added.

"Karim has extensive experience coaching male and female teams in many countries. He also has experience coaching and living in Singapore, which will undoubtedly be beneficial as it gives him the advantage of having a good understanding of football in the country," said Michael Brownes, technical director of the FAS, convinced. In addition to Singapore, Bencherifa has also coached in Morocco, Malta, India and Indonesia.
