Moroccan City Seals Off Neighborhoods, Closes Beach Amid COVID-19 Spike

Faced with the resurgence of new cases of contamination, the local authorities of Salé have taken urgent measures. On Friday, August 14, they ordered the closure "until further notice" of the city’s beach and barricaded 5 major neighborhoods.
Sala El Jadida, El Andalous, Hay El Inbiaat, Hay Errahma and Laâyayda are now barricaded in order to prevent a new surge in coronavirus cases. In this city, circulation is also limited, observes Le 360.
The authorities have also ordered cafes, restaurants, game and sports halls, showers and hammams, as well as hairdressing and beauty salons in the city to close their establishments, while prohibiting the use of neighborhood sports fields. As for food stores and fruit and vegetable vendors, they will remain open until 5 p.m.
According to an official from the Salé prefecture, the closure of the beach was decided due to the non-compliance with barrier gestures that is often observed in this gathering place. According to him, the laxity observed in the observance of these preventive measures and the carelessness of the citizens have led to this high rate of contamination. Faced with this dismal picture, the same source argues that the authorities were forced to choose between discipline and people’s lives. "They chose the first solution," he added.
