Moroccan City Defies Ban, Kills Stray Dogs Despite National Sterilization Plan

About ten stray dogs were shot dead last Tuesday by the municipal services of Dar Bouazza, in the Casablanca region.
The recent partnership and cooperation agreements of the government with the agriculture and health sectors and the National Veterinary Authority to combat this phenomenon of slaughter have not dampened the ardor of certain Moroccan municipal authorities. Despite the government measure, the slaughter of dogs was still practiced in Dar Bouazza, reports Challenge.ma.
This new agreement aims to sterilize the stray dogs scattered in the cities, number them and vaccinate them against rabies, before returning them home in order to fight this phenomenon, indicates a report published by the Ministry of the Interior to take stock of the year 2019.
This measure was adopted because of the risks associated with the use of firearms. It also aims to prevent the use of toxic strychnine in urban areas to avoid the harmful effects of this chemical product on the environment. For this year, the Ministry of the Interior has allocated nearly 3 million DH to waste collection structures to combat this phenomenon.
In total, nearly 140,000 stray dogs are recovered each year by the collective health offices. On the other hand, more than 65,000 people are vaccinated against rabies each year. Each preventive treatment per person costs between 600 and 800 dirhams and is provided free of charge in the 287 anti-rabies centers, it is indicated.
