Moroccan City Cancels $200,000 Car Purchase After Public Outcry

The municipality of Aït Melloul in the Souss-Massa region has finally renounced the purchase of 10 cars worth a total of 2 million dirhams. This acquisition had sparked a lively controversy in the city.
The authorities of Aït Melloul have announced the cancellation of the procedure for the acquisition of these ten Renault or Dacia vehicles costing 200,000 dirhams each, i.e. a total of 2 million dirhams. An operation considered by local actors as a waste of public resources, estimating that the municipality already has a large fleet of cars and that these funds could rather be used to carry out infrastructure that the municipality lacks.
According to these local actors, this acquisition of vehicles for 2 million dirhams is contrary to the circular of the Minister of the Interior, recently addressed to the walis of the regions and the governors of the prefectures and provinces of the kingdom, in which he invited the presidents of municipal councils to show restraint in the preparation and execution of municipal budgets.
