Moroccan Champion El Bakkali Defends Olympic Steeplechase Title Despite Injury Setback

Soufiane El Bakkali has once again made history in Moroccan athletics. The athlete retained his Olympic title in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Paris 2024 Games, thus giving Morocco its first gold medal of these Games. A performance that consecrates his dominance in the discipline and rewards a relentless preparation.
"It is a great pride to represent my country and win this second consecutive Olympic gold medal," said the Moroccan champion after the race. "I went through a difficult season due to an injury, but I worked hard to return to the highest level. I dedicate this title to King Mohammed VI and all Moroccans," admitting that he had thought about not participating in the Paris Olympics.
The race scenario was perfectly managed by El Bakkali, who was able to handle the pressure and counter the attacks of his opponents. "I felt a strong determination from the Ethiopians, but I was ready to take up the challenge," he explained. "I also thank my teammate Mohamed Tindouft who played an important tactical role in the middle of the race."
This historic victory is in line with the successes accumulated by El Bakkali since 2021. The Moroccan has indeed won all the major titles in the discipline, thus confirming his status as the world’s best steeplechase specialist. His exceptional career now places him alongside the greatest legends of Moroccan athletics, such as Hicham El Guerrouj.
Soufiane El Bakkali’s race was marked by a perfect strategy and exceptional physical condition. The Moroccan was able to impose a sustained pace from the first laps, gradually distancing his opponents.
This gold medal is a real breath of fresh air for Moroccan sports. After some disappointments in other disciplines, El Bakkali has brought smiles back to Moroccan supporters.
