Moroccan Buyers Surge in Spanish Property Market Despite Pandemic

Moroccans are now one of the largest foreign buyers of real estate in Spain. Between the third and fourth quarters of 2020, their share increased by 16%.
The latest statistics contained in the report on the Spanish real estate market show a remarkable increase in the share of property purchases by Moroccans. According to the Spanish land registry, this 16% increase recorded between the third and last quarter of the year follows a decline in the share of purchases by Moroccans in the second quarter. Health crisis obliges. In total, Moroccans acquired 3,166 Spanish properties, or 19% less than in 2019.
Despite the health crisis that has severely affected the sector, Moroccans have obtained a significant share of 6.74%, becoming the fourth largest foreign buyers of Spanish real estate, after the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The report also notes a 25% drop in the number of purchases of Spanish houses and apartments by non-residents (46,200 compared to 62,000 in 2019).
According to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics, Moroccans represent 1.82% of the population and form the largest expatriate community in Spain, with 864,546 residents.
