Moroccan Business Owner Arrested in Spain for Exploiting Undocumented Workers

The National Police arrested a 38-year-old Moroccan businessman in Alcoy (Alicante), accused of exploiting his workers in a clothing recycling factory. He will be prosecuted for a presumed crime against the rights of the latter.
In total, 13 employees have been identified as presumed victims of labor exploitation. Most were in an irregular situation, according to the police who, after verification, indicated that they were working more than 50 hours a week for a salary of 150 euros and did not have any social coverage.

Some of them have been working in this warehouse for 2 years, with the employer’s promise that he would regularize their situation and hire them. But when the time came, he demanded 8,000 euros from them to draw up an employment contract, necessary to prepare the regularization file. Similarly, several other workers, although having their papers in order, had neither an employment contract nor any other insurance, denounced the Labor Inspection.

The Moroccan businessman was arrested and accused of a presumed crime against the rights of workers. Immigration and border police officers from the Alcoy police station took part in the operation that led to his arrest, and which aims to fight against exploitation at work, particularly of foreign citizens in an irregular situation as cheap labor.
