Moroccan Bus Fares Surge Ahead of Eid al-Adha, Sparking Union Outcry

Union officials were surprised by the increase in bus ticket prices practiced by two of the main road transport companies before Eid al-Adha. They denounce this unjustified price increase.
The observation is clear. According to Hespress, the prices of journeys between Rabat and some southeastern cities now reach nearly 300 dirhams. This has sparked outrage among union officials. "Companies legally have the right to increase fares during this period, within the limit set by law at 20%," recalls the Secretary General of the Democratic Organization of Transport and Logistics (ODTL), specifying however that "any increase beyond this threshold is considered illegal". And he emphasizes: "this problem repeats itself every year" and calls for "increased vigilance regarding non-compliance with the Highway Code during this period."
For his part, the vice-president of the National Federation of Road Transport denounced these increases, which he considers "unjustified". According to him, these rates, which have become recurrent among companies serving the Southeast during each holiday period, "heavily penalize travelers, especially those traveling with family, since the total cost can easily exceed 1,000 dirhams". He was keen to point out that "the cancellation of the sacrifice this year does not mean the absence of travel, especially for people wishing to spend a few days with their loved ones; which makes these fare increases totally excessive".
