Moroccan Border Workers Urge Reopening of Ceuta Crossing Amid Job Loss Fears

The closure of the borders in Ceuta since mid-March has impacted the daily lives of Moroccan border workers. In an open letter to the Wali of Tetouan, they pleaded for the reopening of land borders to resume their professional activities in the enclave.
In this correspondence, relayed by the Spanish agency Efe, the initiators of this open letter emphasize that in the absence of any visibility related to the opening of the borders, they risk losing their jobs.
According to them, 3,000 people who "do not engage in smuggling to survive" and who have employment contracts and social security are affected by this situation. The signatories of the correspondence also specify that they have commitments in Ceuta, with banks, in addition to family obligations to fulfill.
For the coordinator of this initiative, Mustapha Fezzaka, several people have been working in Ceuta for nearly twenty years, and are employed in carpentry, mechanics, construction or are domestic workers. Moreover, they have a work permit that allowed them to cross the border daily and return home in the afternoon on the Moroccan side of the border.
