Moroccan Border Closure Slashes Spain-Morocco Ferry Traffic by 98%

The port of Almeria, in southern Spain, was desperately empty between the months of June and September last year, a period during which many Moroccans residing abroad are in the habit of taking the boat to Morocco.

Thus, between June 15 and September 15 last year, the port of Almeria experienced a drop of nearly 98% in its passengers, compared to the figures for the previous year. This situation follows the closure of the Moroccan borders and the cancellation of the Marhaba 2020 operation by Morocco.

In detail, only 12,516 passengers used this line, compared to 582,378 passengers during the same period the previous year. The only passengers who used this line were truck drivers of goods between Nador and Melilla and passengers between Almeria and the city of Melilla (a little over 10,000 passengers).

During these three months, 2,459 vehicles crossed the sea, compared to 131,700 the previous year, a drop of 98.1%, according to figures from the port authority published by the Portal Cruceros website.

If we take the figures since the beginning of the year, 117,329 people have traveled from the port of Almeria, compared to 801,203 people during the same period the previous year, a drop of 85.3%. Regarding vehicles, 28,970 have made the crossing, down 84.6%.
