Moroccan Billionaires Dodge $120 Million in Taxes Through Festival Sponsorships

The tax evasion known in the business world in Rabat means that several companies and Moroccan billionaires have avoided paying more than 1.2 billion dirhams in taxes, thus accumulating huge fortunes.
According to the daily Al Massae, companies and major personalities are trying to justify the accumulated billions by subsidizing festivals and artistic activities. Contributions that the newspaper describes as derisory, compared to the amounts of tax royalties.
This shortfall is attributed, according to the newspaper, to a form of negligence that could be described as complicity on the part of the authorities.
Most of the people concerned are counting on the statute of limitations on tax debts in order to legally benefit from the cancellation of debts. They thus take advantage of a lack of coordination and cooperation between the local authorities, the General Treasury of the Kingdom and the Tax Directorate.
