Moroccan-Belgian Zakia Khattabi Appointed as Belgium’s New Environment and Climate Minister

The former co-president of Ecolo has carved out a path to the government led by Alexandre De Croo, now occupying the position of Minister of Environment and Climate. Of Moroccan origin, Zakia Khattabi is one of those many people who have managed to fight to forge a personality and a reputation.
The new Minister of Environment and Climate was born to Moroccan parents of modest means. Passionate about freedom and equality, Zakia Khattabi is one of those young women from an immigrant background. In 2009, she was elected for the first time to the Brussels parliament and managed to join the assembly of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, and the Senate, where the media discovered her, active, on the Justice Committee. She had an impeccable political career until 2014 when difficulties arose. But she managed to get elected as a deputy in the Chamber.
The difficulties encountered, however, did not discourage her. On the contrary, she rolled up her sleeves to write the pages of her political career made of rejection, underhanded tricks, concession, abandonment but also firmness in the decisions taken.
Zakia Khatabbi has joined the De Croo government and is counting on her many political experiences to successfully carry out the responsibility that has been entrusted to her.
