Moroccan Bee Crisis: Colony Collapse Threatens Honey Industry

Moroccan beekeepers have been facing the gradual disappearance of bee colonies in different regions of the country for a few weeks now. They have raised the alarm about a situation that is putting their industry in difficulty.

Concerned, these stakeholders, through the Moroccan Interprofessional Federation of Beekeeping (FIMAP), have called on the veterinary services of the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) to determine the causes and find appropriate solutions to the phenomenon, reports Hespress.

This situation could be linked in particular to insufficient rainfall, poor bee nutrition resulting from a lack of pastures, the health status of hives and beekeeping practices, according to a statement from the federation, which intends to deepen the research to know the real causes and the factors responsible.

In the meantime, the organization intends to continue its efforts to reduce the negative effects of this phenomenon in the context of cooperation with all stakeholders, given the importance of apiaries and bees in the ecological and agricultural balance and economic development, as well as the importance of the sector in terms of employment.

A monitoring committee has been set up, involving all the parties concerned, the same source points out, in order to know the causes of this phenomenon, determine the means to reduce its effects, and to reflect on the support that affected beekeepers should receive.
