Moroccan Beach Safety: Drones Boost Lifeguard Surveillance
Morocco is refining its summer security system on its coasts. To prevent drowning, authorities are deploying thousands of better-paid seasonal lifeguards, now supported by surveillance drones.
As of this week, lifeguards have taken up their posts on the coastline until September. Selected in April from candidates aged 20 to 40, they come to fill the "difficulty" that Civil Protection faces in covering all swimming areas alone, as Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit explained, who counted 3,315 recruits last year.

Faced with the influx, Agadir is increasing its workforce from 200 to 215 rescuers, some of whom operate year-round thanks to the very mild local climate. To retain these young people, their monthly allowance jumps from 2,500 to 3,200 dirhams over a five-month period.

The other major asset of this season relies on aerial technology. The use of drones is expanding to many beaches following successful trials conducted last summer in Agadir and Tangier. These flying devices offer an ultra-precise panorama from the sky, allowing control posts to spot danger and act immediately during peak attendance times. This strategy is establishing itself as a true "factor to guarantee intervention effectiveness" and rescue swimmers at the critical moment.
