Moroccan bank branches on the way to disappearing

Bank Al-Maghrib announced the decrease in the total number of bank branches on the territory of the kingdom, from 5,914 in 2022 to 5,811 in 2023.
This decline is due to the closure of 145 branches and the opening of 42 new ones in 2023, explained the central bank in a note. In detail, the Société Générale Marocaine des Banques closed 49 branches. Similarly, Attijariwafa bank closed 33, Bank of Africa 28, the Banque Marocaine pour le Commerce et l’Industrie 20, and the Banque Populaire du Maroc 15.
Currently, the Banque Populaire du Maroc has the largest number of branches nationwide, with 1,372. It is followed by Al Barid Bank (950), Attijariwafa bank (928), Bank of Africa (653), Crédit Agricole du Maroc (495), Crédit Immobilier et Hôtelier (327), Société Générale Marocaine des Banques (305), Banque Marocaine pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (270), and Bank Al-Maghrib (267).
Regarding participative banks, Umnia Bank has the largest network with 52 branches. It is followed by Bank Assafa (41) and Bank Al Yousr (25). By region, the Casablanca-Settat region is in the lead with 1,651 branches, followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (868), Fès-Meknès (674) and Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma (555).
