Moroccan Avocado Exports Surge to Record High, Defying Drought Concerns

Drought and saturation of European markets are far from having a negative impact on Moroccan avocado exports. These have, for the first time, reached a historic record.
In Morocco, the avocado season has been a real success for the second consecutive year. Moroccan avocado exports are said to have reached an unprecedented level with 100,000 or 110,000 tons shipped during the past season. This makes Morocco one of the pillars of global supply, according to analyses by EastFruit and FreshPlaza. The drought episodes that affected several production basins have therefore not negatively impacted the kingdom’s production. The commercial climate marked by market saturation and the general erosion of prices is by no means a brake on Moroccan exports. "In a context dominated by irregularity and precipitation, Moroccan reliability becomes a criterion of preference," observes a Dutch broker.
In Europe, importers are facing a proliferation of arrivals that destabilizes price-setting mechanisms. In Italy, markets are flooded with Peruvian Hass, causing a sharp drop in prices, while Pinkerton avocados are experiencing renewed interest. Thanks to French, Dutch and German demand, Spain is recording vigorous growth in its trade flows in the first quarter of 2025. In Germany, volumes imported within the European Union (EU) show an annual increase of 37%. This is dominated by large sizes that weaken the spot market.
While in France, demand for Hass avocados remains firm because it is largely supplied by Peru, there is a risk of precipitating a premature closure of the season, estimated to be a month earlier than usual due to the scale of volumes poured into the market. In London, Hamburg and Antwerp, operators are forced to revise their margins downwards in the face of abundance and increasing heterogeneity of supply.
