Moroccan Authorities Bust Counterfeit Olive Oil Ring Near Agadir

A counterfeit olive oil network has been dismantled in the Inezgane Aït Melloul region, near Agadir. Two individuals were arrested during an operation by the Royal Gendarmerie.

The intervention of the law enforcement agencies follows precise information concerning the illegal activities of the group. The suspects were suspected of packaging oil of unidentified origin in bottles bearing false labels of commercial brands.

This fraudulent practice constitutes an infringement of food product regulations. It also represents a health risk for consumers and is detrimental to olive oil producers who comply with the standards in force.

During the searches, the gendarmes seized equipment used for counterfeiting. They also discovered significant quantities of oil without any documents attesting to its origin or compliance.

The two arrested persons were placed in custody. The investigation continues in order to identify any other persons involved and to determine the precise extent of the network’s activities. The investigations should make it possible to trace the supply and distribution circuit of this oil.

In recent years, the price of olive oil has risen sharply in Morocco, leading some individuals to try to take advantage of this scarcity and inflation to profit from it.
