Moroccan Author Explores History of Algerian Migration to Kingdom

A virtual conference organized by the Maroc du Patrimoine Foundation allowed the writer-journalist Mohamed Seddik Maâninou to review the different stages of Algerian migration to Morocco.
During this conference entitled "Lest we forget. Moroccan Algerians", the writer-journalist explained that Algerians flocked to various cities of the Kingdom in search of asylum, in search of employment or political motivations linked to the French presence in Algeria. The first waves of Algerian immigration to Morocco began through two ships that docked in Tetouan. At the time, the Sultan of Morocco gave instructions to take care of them by allocating them subsidies.
The fact that Morocco is a Muslim country has made it a safe place for Algerian migrants. Maâninou explained that the Algerians came mainly from Tlemcen and Oran, to the major Moroccan cities such as Oujda, Fez, Meknes, Salé and the Gharb region. The city of Fez was the one that welcomed the most migrants, about 11% of the city’s population, which had 60,000 inhabitants.
In Morocco, the Algerians practiced various professions. From translation with the French occupier to teaching in Moroccan schools due to their mastery of both Arabic and French, they had no trouble integrating. The Kingdom was of great support to them by accompanying them in several areas.
