Moroccan Athletics Faces Scrutiny: Parliamentary Report Reveals Infrastructure Gaps and Strategic Shortfalls

A parliamentary fact-finding mission looked into Moroccan athletics. The grievances against the federation should be the subject of debate at the next meeting of the members of the Social Sectors Commission of the House of Representatives.

In its report, the mission expressed regret at noting that the athletics track has only six lanes, instead of eight, for regional competitions. This did not allow the Kingdom to host continental and world meetings.

The deputies also made the bitter observation of the existence of disparities between the duration of the realization of the athletics tracks in several cities, notes L’Économiste.

The parliamentarians noted the failure of the strategy aimed at reaching five million practitioners by 2020, as the minister had insisted in Fez and Meknes. Financial management is problematic; questions remain about the halt of the Program for the realization of 20 stadiums or athletics tracks. In total, 54,000 athletes, from 284 active clubs, are recognized.

The President of the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation (FRMA), Abdeslam Ahizoune, should be reprimanded by the deputies, during the presentation of the mission’s report. But according to the latest news, he was prevented by a trip, as reported by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hassan Abyaba.

In its recommendations, the mission insisted on Morocco’s human capital in the rural areas, the equipment of the areas with basic infrastructure, the construction of an athletics center in each of the 12 regions of the country, the signing of the framework agreement with the institutional partners, including the Football Federation, in order to better optimize public subsidies in terms of infrastructure.
