Moroccan Artist Jailed After Seeking to Report Homophobic Harassment

The 4-month prison sentence of artist Abdelatif Nhaila is causing controversy, especially among groups defending individual freedoms. By going to file a complaint for homophobia, the artist was far from imagining that he would be prosecuted and then convicted.
At the origin of this case, a denunciation by the transgender influencer Naoufal Moussa, better known as Sofia Taloni. At the beginning of April, she revealed photos and personal data of Moroccan homosexuals, published on certain dating applications dedicated to the LGBT community. The consequences were immediate. Several community members were rejected by their loved ones. As if that were not enough, Sofia Taloni called in a video posted on Instagram for a campaign of denunciation targeting the LGBT community in Morocco, "to put an end to this social hypocrisy".
Among the victims of the campaign of lynching of homosexuals on social networks, the artist Abdelatif Nhaila. He says he was the victim of harassment and death threats. He decides to file a complaint at the police station in the city of Sidi Kacem where he is from. But against all expectations, he will be placed in custody for 48 hours, before being accused of violating the state of health emergency and insulting a civil servant during the exercise of his duties. The rest is his conviction to 4 months in prison with a suspended sentence and the payment of a fine of 10,000 dirhams and 1 symbolic dirham to be paid to the complaining police officer, indicates l’Observateur.
